The creation of Fund 1 was significantly supported by the founding limited partner of SoftBank Group, which further solidified the fund's position in the venture capital landscape. In 2023, the leadership team, comprising Paul Judge and Marcelo Claure, acquired the fund from SoftBank, marking a new chapter in its journey. Following this acquisition, they announced the launch of Fund 2, aiming to build on the successful thesis established by the original fund.
Open Opportunity Fund is currently in the process of raising Fund 2, with a strategic objective of continuing to deliver robust financial returns by supporting Black and Latino technology founders. The fund actively invites participation from corporations, institutions, qualified individuals, and other limited partners who share a commitment to this important mission.
To date, Open Opportunity Fund has invested $100 million across a diverse portfolio of 75 tech companies led by Black and Latino founders. Notable portfolio companies include Atomic, Brex, Career Karma, Cityblock Health, Eight Sleep, Esusu, Lendtable, Lumu, Mayvenn, Paystand, Praxis Labs, QuickNode, Squire, and Subject. The fund has already achieved seven successful exits, further demonstrating its effective investment strategy and the promising potential of its backed companies.
